Papaya Erissery



Erissery is a popular dish in Kerala..A variety of erisseries can be made by using different vegetables...Mathanga(pumpkin) erisseri is a special item in Onam sadhya and in Marriages...Here Im sharing erissery made with slightly ripe papaya and vanpayar (Red beans)...

Papaya - 2 cups ( cut into cubes)
Vanpayar( Red beans) - 1 cup.
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp.
Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp.
Water and salt as reqd.
Grinding :
Shredded Coconut - 1 cup.
Green chillies - 3 nos,
Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp.
Turmeric powder - a pinch.
Seasoning :
Oil - 2 tsp.
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
Dried red chillies - 3 nos.
Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup.
Few Curry leaves.
Method :
     Soak red beans for atleast 2-4 hrs. Grind the coconut and the other ingredients with little water to make a fine smooth paste.Cook the red beans in a pressure cooker with a pinch of turmeric powder and salt.Pour water as rqd...and keep it aside.Cook the papaya pieces in a pan with turmeric powder and salt..when it starts to boil add the cooked red beans..(or u can cook papaya pieces in pressure cooker )Allow it to cook well together.Then add the grinded coconut mixture and stir well..Heat it well for 6-8 mins in medium flame..When it becomes thick,remove the pan from the flame.Heat oil in a pan splutter mustard seeds,red chillies,curry leaves and the grated coconut.Fry it well till the coconut turns golden colour..Do not let it burn out...Pour this seasoning over the curry and gently mix well..Serve hot with Rice ...
